New Year News Roundup

What a great start to 2019 it has been for the club. We are back on track (literally) on Tuesdays with a great turnout of junior, Fit4Life and senior members being put through their paces in their quest for greater speed, agility and endurance. It is also great to see many of our 0-5 km group continuing to join us for Tuesday runs. A big thanks to our coaches who come out in the wind, rain and even the snow each week, all on a voluntary basis.

On January 14th Togher AC’s Men’s Novice Cross Country Team (Evan Byrne, Ruairi Casey, Ian Tivy, Gavin Sweeney and Craig Harrington) received their award of Cork City Sports Athlete of the Month Award. The award is in recognition of their fantastic performance resulting in gold for Togher AC in the National Novice Men’s Cross Country race in Navan in December.  A fantastic result for the team, their coaches and all those who supported them. Evan Byrne continued his winning form by finishing 3rd place over 3,000m in the Senior Men category in just 8:22 at the Athletics Association of Ireland indoor games on February 2nd.

We also are super proud of Busie Mhlophe who featured in the Runners’ World UK January edition as part of a feature on the Sanctuary Runners Initiative which has been supported by Togher AC.

The first race on the 2019 calendar for many of our members was the John Treacy Dungarvan 10 mile race. here was a great turnout from the club with a number of PBs on the day and a female team place of 8th ,with Helen Walsh, Shirley Twomey and Marjorie O’Connor flying the flag for the club as the first three registered females over the line for the club. The community of Dungarvan came out to support the record number of runners who took part in the race and Aidan Hartnett was on hand with a few motivational speeches along the country roads to stop people from flagging! The 10-mile slog was more than worth it for the wonderful spread and banter afterwards and it was a great start to the 2019 racing season for our club members. Thanks to all at West Waterford AC for a superbly organised and really friendly race.
