Athlete interview – Mick Colohan

Athlete interview – Mick Colohan

This month’s interview and profile is with Togher Tiger Mick Colohan.

When/how/why did you take up running?

I started running properly in 2015 while serving overseas with the army. It was a great way to pass the time and improve my fitness.

When and why did you join Togher AC?

A good friend and work colleague of mine Dave Doc Doherty asked me to come along as he noticed I had taken up running. I joined as I missed the competitiveness of organised sports. I played hurling football and soccer in a previous life.

What is/are your preferred distance/s?

I love all distances and the challenges they bring. But for some reason I always fancy a 10 mile. It’s the greatest test of speed and endurance.

What is/are your PB/s?

5k 17.12 Marina 5k
10k 36.12 Killarney 10k
10 mile 59.58 Dungarvan
Half marathon 1.28 Cork half
Full marathon 3.13 Cork full

What is your proudest running moment?

Completing my first marathon in 2016 in dublin. It was one of the best feelings I have ever felt. I knew I was hooked then.

Who is/are your coach/es?

Tony Kelleher, Aidan Hartnett and all the seniors team members. I learn something new about one of them every week. Every days a school day.

What is your main running goal for the next 12 months?

Sub 3 hour marathon in Rotterdam.

Sub 59.58 10 Mile and improve my 10k and 5k times.

Hopefully do a coaching course.

What is your most memorable race/running moment and why?

I returned to running in August/September 2021 after our little boy Ben passed away. My team made it as easy as possible. I think that’s why I enjoy being with this group so much. Everyone is there to listen and offer support whether it be running or life.

What do you like most about Togher AC?

The people and coaches. They’re not just team mates and coaches but friends.

What would you say to someone thinking of taking up running?

Go for it. If you run you are a runner, whether it be a 5k or 50k. It’s such a great outlet to meet new people and great for your mental health.

Who is your favourite sporting hero?

Aidan “800 to go” Hartnett/Tony “I’m on the way” Kelleher.

What is your favourite food?

I love all things Italian. Especially pasta. I make a mean chicken, pesto and cream pasta.

What is your favourite drink?

Not a huge drinker anymore but probably a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc from Classic Drinks.

What is your favourite film?

Gladiator, Saving Private Ryan, Forrest Gump.
